Chester's Obituary

Chester A. Holmes – “Chet” as his family as friends called him – was a father, grandfather, businessman, math teacher/tutor, sports fan, warm companion and patient kind soul.

He was born, January 17, 1944 in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Helen and Jonathan Chesterfield Holmes. He attended public schools in Brooklyn and Mt. Vernon, N.Y., graduating from A.B. Davis High School in Mt. Vernon in 1961. He received a bachelors degree from St. Johns University in New York in 1967 and a Masters from Baruch College in 2006.

From 1967 to 1981 Chet worked as a systems engineer for IBM in New York and in California where he and his family moved in 1971. Throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s, he worked for or owned a number of small technology companies in the area, including Crown City Business Systems, Candle Corporation, and Positive Technology. In all these endeavors he displayed leadership, perseverance and creativity.

Drawing on his familiarity with Newtonian concepts and his Job-like patience, Chet set about tutoring high school students in math, starting his own tutoring firm, Math Can Be Positive in 1991. He also later worked as a tutor and an associate professor at LaVerne University and Pasadena City College.

A devoted disciple of Jesus Christ, Chet attended Victory Bible Church in Pasadena and Fortress Community Church in Chino Hills. More importantly, Chet tried very hard every day to live his life in a Christ-like way.

Chet loved his family, his work, his God, the Lakers, sports talk radio, fried chicken, lemonade and saltine crackers with ketchup. Other than the Almighty and family, we’re not sure of his order of preference.

He leaves behind three daughters, Christine of Orlando, Fla., Monica of New York and Mona and husband, Craig of Los Angeles, two granddaughters, Christine of Madrid, Spain and Simonne of Baltimore, MD, two brothers, Gilbert and wife, Joy and Steven and wife Mireille, both of Columbia, MD, former wife LaRue Herron-Holmes, nieces and nephew, cousins, and many, many relatives and friends.
